Who is Taiwanese?
In ontological terms, Taiwanese national identity can only exist in discourse. It is a way of talking about what kind of people we are. Every utterance adds to the concept of 'Taiwanese-ness' and gives substance to the features attached to it. Taiwanese identity has no fixed or essential permanence; rather it is formed and transformed on an ongoing basis both by those who identify as Taiwanese and those identify the Taiwanese as Taiwanese or something else. Taiwanese-ness is intersubjective, co-constituted and spoken of both materially and ideationally. It is being 'spoken of' that constitutes Taiwanese-ness.
