First GRTS

Introductory Graduate Research Training Seminar on Wednasday. Met Ruth Blakeley, Pak Kuan Lee and other PhD researchers, new and continuing. Richard Sakwa introduces the department and Ruth goes through the postgrad handbook with Philip Cunliffe. Very impressive team of staff and researchers here with some interesting - and not so interesting - areas of research. Irish girl, who was born in Sunderland, doing the EU just as it's about to collapse!

Jonathan feeds me gossip on CEWL and I'm happy to be away from the place. Just need to decide on full-time or part-time. I think I'll stick with part-time. Managed to get access to VCR - PhD researchers' study room - and got some writing up done on Discourse Analysis. The reading is going to be overwhelming, though, so I'm going to have to follow my own advice and start writing, writing, writing from the off.

Drinks in the evening with the Postgrad research groups in Bramley's and I read carefully through the postgrad handbook on Thursday.

Must plan out my year and meet up with Pak, but I'm not sure how far he's going to stick to structured meetings. Tells me to see him in his office hour, but we need a proper introductory meeting to plan the year out.

If I can get a first draft of the historical background and conceptual framework, covering realist constructivism and discourse analysis and the literature review knocked out by Easter, I'll be well ahead of the game and ready to go through calling card and probationary presentation.
